Wow not only are we on the final few steps of the year 2019 – it is also the final few steps of a decade, the second decade of the 2000’s!!

Sometimes I have looked at the calendar in the past week and just wondered not only where the heck the decade has gone but find myself wondering at moments on how lucky I survived it and enjoyed the memories that were left behind.

Lucky because of November 27, 2012 when I literally died on a gurney in the ER of our local hospital from a massive ‘widow maker’ heart attack, only to be brought back with the diligence of the nurses on duty at the time. That sent me on a four-day trip to meet my first cardiologist and get implanted with a total of five stents. That is the lucky part of the past decade.

Lucky because within a couple of months of surviving the heart attack, I was diagnosed with late Stage III COPD to go along with my already very present severe asthma. So yes, I can say I am lucky to be alive, walking and talking.

Now for the HOPES and FEARS of the upcoming year!

My hope number one is that I will do a much better job at getting to my writing on a daily basis to cover my blogs on COPD/Asthma/Chronic Illness as well as Grumpy Gramps observations of life and ‘Just Sayin’ which is my thoughts and ideas on the world today. A couple of years ago I wrote a lot more and had a much larger following, now it is time to get back to those days.

My hope number two is to be diligent on my major writing projects which includes a short novel, a book covering ways to deal with chronic illness and a couple of other short story/novelette style writes.

My hope number three is to be more of an ambassador for COPD/Asthma information and research.

My hope number four is to be a whole lot more diligent on my body and getting it back in more workable shape. This means getting more consistent on my exercise bike as well as being more observant on what, how much and when I eat!

My hope number five is to become a better person for my wife, my family (which now includes five adult children, two in-laws, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren with one more on the way), my friends and of course my constant companion – our Maltese puppy, Frosty Lou.

My fears for the new year will begin if I get three to four months in and realize how many of these hopes I have already busted or faltered from.

My fears for the new year have to do with my health as I continue to struggle with getting the weight down despite knowing how much better I seem to feel when I do get it down some.

My fears for the new year include keeping friendships, something for which I seem to struggle with while not always understanding why.

My fears for the new year include becoming more of a hermit or loner, something which I have discussed here a couple of times in the past few months. I never used to shy away from people and places like I seem to do now, and that needs to be dealt with.

My fears for the new year will be not having the financial resources to do things I would like to do when I feel up to doing them. But when you live on disability and are physically very limited on what you can do, it can become very difficult to make that extra money to help with expenses and living in general. Guess this is where I need to push my writing more.

That in general is how I am looking at the walk I will soon be taking from year 2019 into year 2020!!

That is where my heart is at with my yearly HOPES & FEARS for the NEW YEAR!!

And that my friends, is where ‘Lenny’ and Me are 4 today.
